How do I get my notes to stop rattling?

There are two different kinds of string rattle: DURING the note, and AFTER the note.

During the Note

Start by making sure you’re aiming for the end of the fret. The further away from the fret wire you are, the more likely your note will rattle.

If you’re still getting a rattle even when you’re at the end of the fret, you might need a little more pressure. Try pressing just a little harder until the rattle goes away, and eventually this amount of pressure will become second-nature.

If you’re at the end of the fret, pressing harder, and still hearing a rattle, you may actually need a setup. Try diagnosing that with this video: Make Your Sh*tty Bass Play Like a DREAM (5 Steps)

After the Note

If you’re getting rattle after a note, this comes from lifting your finger off the string too slowly.

When you’re pressing all the way down, the note is clean. When you lift all the way up, the note will be muted.

But in-between these two extremes, the string will vibrate against the fret wire, and cause a rattling sound.

Try to make it like an on/off switch, going from pressing all the way down to not pressing at all as fast as you can.

It will take practice for this to become perfect, but I promise it’ll feel more natural over time.
